It must have been so difficult to reveal the truth to Sarah, but best that she learns the publishing game early on than after it's too late. Never, ever pay an agent or publisher.

Sarah may not appreciate you now, but she will. It's not just legitimate publishing houses that look down on self-published books. I have a friend who is a storyteller. He decided to publish his own book so that he could raise his fees ("authors" make more money than "mere storytellers"). Now, initially he did make money from the book, but librarians have sneered at the vanity press business. These days, he doesn't get as much storytelling work, because he is busy pushing the book and his fees are too high. Let's hope a legitimate publishing house will take Sarah's manuscript and run with it.

I wholeheartedly agree that Sarah is far too valuable as a potential long-time writer to get burned by such an arrangement.

Of course our whole society is so zoned-in on the end game validation which serves as the platform on which such prospects are built. It's hard to choose writing over publishing. But occasionally life steps in and forces us to write; and set aside publishing for a time.

Hey Deb! I hear ya. And like I said, for some people vanity presses can be just the thing. People our age are old and wise enough to be able to make that decision. At 13 years old, I thought Sarah would benefit from some input. Of course, that remains to be seen.

Some of us don't have the years to wait and others don't have the patience. What're you going to do with us?

This is a great summary though for those who have gotten lost in the language and were too shy (or intimidated) to ask.
