It's not just legitimate publishing houses that look down on self-published books. I have a friend who is a storyteller. He decided to publish his own book so that he could raise his fees ("authors" make more money than "mere storytellers"). Now, initially he <em>did</em> make money from the book, but librarians have sneered at the vanity press business. These days, he doesn't get as much storytelling work, because he is busy pushing the book and his fees are too high. Of course our whole society is so zoned-in on the end game validation which serves as the platform on which such prospects are built. It's hard to choose writing over publishing. I hear ya. And like I said, for some people vanity presses can be just the thing. People our age are old and wise enough to be able to make that decision.
