What a great daughter you have raised. I am so glad you went on the trip and so glad you wrote about it here! I have read Wicked the book, and my chorus is singing “Popular” in our spring concert. I hope to see it on stage one day.

Wow. Beautiful post. What a great mom you are and what a thoughtful daughter you have raised. I am so glad you went on the trip and so glad you wrote about it here! I have read Wicked the book, and my chorus is singing "Popular" in our spring concert. I hope to see it on stage one day.

I love it when kids dig deeper into a story. Don't envy you that bus trip.

edj, I actually tried to read it but couldn't get into it. Other friends who have read it give it mixed reviews. Some loved it. Others had the same problem I had with it being too dense. That probably doesn't help... : )

Shoot. I was coming to ask if the book was as good. I'm really intrigued by this post, but I'm unlikely to ever get to see the play.

Holly, I haven't read the book either. That's cool that your hoodie became a connection to bring mothers, daughters, and points of view together. Love when that happens.

When Courtney was a junior in high school their marching band used Wicked as their competition music and theme. That led to going to see Wicked in Pittsburgh on stage. Then one day....we were in Borders and there was the book so Court bought that and loved it. One of her all time top 10 picks.

I have not had the privilege of seeing the play or reading the book though I did get to see the totally awesome marching band competition.

amusing story...not totally off topic. Courtney and I were touring a college campus in April-ish. I always purchased a hoodie as support for the marching band and had on my Wicked hoodie. The woman behind me asked me if I had seen the play, which of course I did not, but it was a starting point for sharing our day with another mother/daughter who had seen the play and we had a better time during that tour because of that conversation pivot point.

Your daughter and my daughter really would be good friends if we lived close to you. My India was always called the mediator throughout elementary and middle school, even today in her junior year of high school she never takes sides. There have been some attempts to lure her over to the dark side, but she refuses. She has the gift of seeing the third side (something I've needed to learn from her once in a while) and this has made her one of the most balanced and sought after girls in her school for friendships. I've always loved the stories that, at first, on the surface, are a simple tale of good vs. evil, but look closer, every time, and you'll see a wounded soul under there trying to balance things out the best way they know how. Like the proverbial pendulum that swings from one extreme to the other, let's us hope with the gift of a clear eye and a knowing heart, our daughters will grow up into people who can bring balance back somewhere in the middle for their peers......and the rest of us. Grandiose thinking? Not really, it's where understanding and peace begin......right in the our own backyards.
