Then I’ll Be Happy

Many of us fall into the trap of believing happiness lies somewhere off in the future… When I get that promotion. When I find my true love.

We live in a culture that promotes this mindset, and it’s deeply ingrained in many of us. It’s part of the mistaken belief that gets promoted about how happiness lies in external achievements – wealth, relationships, fame, and recognition. It’s a belief that makes us think that changing our external circumstances will bring us lasting happiness.

But, the real journey we want to be on is to inner happiness and we get to that by learning how to manifest the spiritual within us.

It’s practices like mindfulness and gratitude that help us find this inner happiness. Mindfulness teaches us to live in the present and appreciate what we have now. Gratitude shifts our focus from what we don’t have to what we do have, helping us feel more content.

True happiness also involves accepting ourselves as we are and finding purpose in our lives. When we do things that align with our values, we feel more fulfilled. This kind of happiness can’t be found in external achievements or possessions.

Of course, external factors do play a role in our overall well-being. Basic needs like financial stability, health, and relationships are foundational to our happiness. However, the mistake lies in overvaluing these factors and viewing them as the sole sources of happiness.

Here are three key things to remember:

Happiness is a Choice

We can choose to be happy right now, regardless of what our life looks like at this moment. Happiness is not contingent on getting something we don’t have. Research shows that once basic needs are met, increased income or material goods don’t significantly impact happiness levels. We all know people who “have it all” on paper yet still feel unsatisfied and empty inside. The path to happiness lies in our perspective and approach to each day.

Live in the Present

Staying focused on the present moment is key to feeling genuinely happy more often. When our minds latch onto the past or anxiously rush into the future, we lose the happiness we could be experiencing right now. Each day offers countless simple pleasures when we pay attention. Train your mind to live fully in the present instead of always fixating on what’s next.

Cultivate Inner Peace

Reflect on what truly matters to you instead of getting caught up in society’s narrow definitions of happiness. Activities like meditation, spending time in nature, practicing gratitude, and helping others enable us to cultivate inner peace and life satisfaction. True happiness arises from within and ripples out to positively impact those around us.

So, the next time you catch yourself thinking, “Then I’ll be happy,” remember that happiness is not a place we reach but a choice we make.
