I was speaking with a long-time mentoring student who’s found himself working very hard not to become embroiled in verbal battles of late. His question to me was:
Is there a way that we can sanely engage in intelligent conversation
that can include differing views, without resorting to hostility?
Great question, don’t you think? Is it possible to discuss politics or religion, or anything we feel passionately about, without getting locked into stalemated arguments? Which usually results in the predictable … Read More
I’d talked about getting Graidy’s DNA test done. Well, the results have come back and, in a million years, I never would have guessed American Eskimo Dog! I can absolutely see the Border Collie and some kind of spaniel mix–though not English Springer Spaniel. My best guess was Border Collie/ Brittany Spaniel. The mystery is finally over.
It’s that time of year again. Around the 1st or 2nd week of October, I plant my garlic. But how do you know which bulbs you should save for your seed cloves? And then how do you know which cloves from those bulbs to plant? It’s easy, once you know what to look for.

The total eclipse coincided with the full moon nearest the fall equinox, known as the Harvest Moon. And the moon was at its closest approach to Earth for the year, making it also a supermoon or perigee moon. The ‘Blood Moon’ eclipse gets its name from the reddish … Read More
Lots of animal families live on our little corner of the wild kingdom. This family of wild turkeys is the most recent to take up residence. I find them particularly interesting in light of my recent viewing of PBS’ My Life as a Turkey.
When they’re all together, there’s quite a traffic jam as they try to make it from one end of the property to the other. That is until our traffic cops tell them to move it … Read More
Seems there are a LOT of Aussie mixes out there that people have questions about. After helping a friend evaluate an Australian Shepherd Rottweiler mix, I’ve been getting a ton of mail asking what I thought of an Australian Shepherd Lab mix.
This one is a lot easier to answer! If you have the time and space to exercise a high energy dog–this may just be the perfect combo. There are just a couple of things to be mindful … Read More
