Problem-Solving Dog Furniture

Because we live in an old farmhouse, we are always short on storage space. We have no attic or basement to speak of, so we need to take advantage of every way we can to make storage. In my perennial quest to get and stay organized, I came across these great ideas.

Yeah… No

I was raised by a father who taught me how to be creative, resourceful, and self-reliant. There’s little I can’t fix and not much that I can’t build–up to and including completely renovating a house by myself.

All the tools in the garage (and there are lots) are mine. In other words, I’m handy. And I love to invent things and improve on things that are less than perfectly designed.

Which also makes me a little bit of a gadget … Read more

Affordable Outdoor Cat Fencing that Works

My brother, Eric, called the other day to relay the sad news that the family’s beloved cat, Nanners, hadn’t made it back home in several days, has not been found with an exhaustive search and posters, and so is presumed to have gone on to the next world.

Nanners, Nan, or Nano (her proper name given because she was so tiny) was a stray kitten the family found on the side of the road 4 years ago. She was matted, … Read more

Peel Head of Garlic in 10 Seconds

You guys know I love my garlic. I love growing it. I love giving it as gifts. I love cooking with it.

But I don’t love peeling it. Like onions, peeling garlic presents its own challenges. No, it won’t make you cry, but it will eat the skin off your fingertips if you try to  peel more than a few cloves by hand.

I can’t tell you how many gadgets I’ve bought over the years that claim to peel and … Read more

Sticky Paws Tape — Cat Clawing Deterent

I love our cat, Finn. But I hate what Mr. Destructo does to our furniture. I could open a cat store with all the cat scratching posts, etc, that have stood idly by while he mangles my furniture.

I thought I’d found the winner when I’d discovered Feliway. And I must say that actually worked for several months. But I’ve had to move on to more serious deterrents. This double-sided tape works great!

Dog Chew Treats — Safe or Unsafe

All puppies and most grown dogs have a need to chew. While both Kiera and Graidy were chewers as puppies, Kiera could take or leave a bone or chewie now. Graidy still lives for them; he needs to chew. Perhaps your dog falls somewhere in the middle. Regardless, no doubt, at some point we’ve all bought our dogs a treat or chew toy. Who doesn’t like to treat their dogs occassionally? But did you know that the very treat you’re … Read more
