How Many Dogs Old are You?

4dogsOver the years, many people have asked for help on how to pick the perfect dog. I’m always happy to assist when I can. I usually start by asking: How many dogs old are you?

Huh? you say.  Are you asking me how old in dog years I am?

No, it’s not a sneaky way to calculate your age. Rather, it’s a very important question in a list of questions that need to be asked to ascertain what kind of … Read More

How to Turn Any Stranger into Your Dog’s Friend

Dog Food DoorWith the holidays (and lots of company) approaching, if you want to enter our house in relative peace, it’s best to come bearing gifts.

Specifically, dog food treats are most welcome. But if you’ve forgotten yours at home, no worries. I’ve attached a container of kibble right at garage door knob level. You can’t miss it coming in.

Think of it akin to entering church, where you bless yourself with holy water before entering. Kinda like ensuring good luck–

Traffic Jam in the Country

Lots of animal families live on our little corner of the wild kingdom. This family of wild turkeys is the most recent to take up residence. I find them particularly interesting in light of my recent viewing of PBS’ My Life as a Turkey.

When they’re all together, there’s quite a traffic jam as they try to make it from one end of the property to the other. That is until our traffic cops tell them to move it … Read More

Time to Figure it Out

Graidy-lookalike

Graidy went to visit friends the other day and had a great ol’ time! Actually, this is just a Graidy look-alike. When a friend sent this photo, I had to do a double-take.

Since we got Graidy from a wonderful Border Collie rescue place, we’ve always wondered what he was mixed with. While he certainly had the high energy of a Border Collie, he had zero herding instinct. That is, if you counted herding anything on two or four … Read More

Dessert is in the Eye of the Beholder

finn-litter-box It’s been an exciting couple of days. I go away for just ONE day and come back to find that not only has Wink eaten a corner of a rag rug to shreds, but then he helped himself to the covered kitty litter box for dessert!

How did I find this out? When he started throwing up the evidence.

Not aware that he’d been binge-eating at this bazaar banquet, I quickly got brought up to speed with one look at … Read More

a very Good day

Australian shepherd in snow

I just finished walking the 3-mile loop in honor of Kiera’s second year on the other side. I still miss her every single day. And I still deeply appreciate every single day that I got to share with her.

Some beings just leave that kind of permanent imprint on you… Like an invisible tattoo that marks you, but only you can see.

Kiera would have immensely enjoyed today’s walk–not just because it was a beautiful sunny day– but because everything … Read More

Wish Dog Powered Scooters Had Been Invented When Kiera Was Young

When Kiera, my Austrialian Shepherd, was young, Andrew and I would take turns every day taking her for a run. Not each of us every other day. Every day, twice a day at least, we’d take her for a 3-mile run. I’d have the morning shift and he’d take the evening shift. That barely took the edge off her need to run.

My legs don’t want to run 3 miles everyday anymore.  So if I were ever to get another … Read More
