If This Dog…

… could figure out how to crawl inside her skin to be that much closer, I’ve no doubt he would!

This is how the two of them sleep every night. Face to face. Breath to breath. Heartbeat to heartbeat.

It’s a love like no other. And I can’t believe that Cait has finally found it. It’s been a long time coming. So long, in fact, that I wondered if she’d ever get to have the experience.

All it took was … Read more

Follow the Bouncing Ball

With all the various projects and work stuff clamoring to get done, I’m starting to feel like the proverbial bouncing ball.

Boing! Talk to this client. Boing! Get that paperwork done! Boing! Add this idea to the to-do list. Boing! Research that article and get quotes. Boing! Meet this deadline. Boing! Boing! Boing!

In the course of all my boing-ing around, I’ve run across some items I thought you might find interesting. For your enjoyment, in no particular order:

Joining the Modern World

One of the ongoing battles I have with the modern world is how it works so hard to rob our children of their childhoods. I’ve fought a good war on as many fronts as I’ve been able — protecting my daughter when she’s needed protecting, and encouraging her to move out to meet that world when she’s given the signal that she’s been ready.

Sometimes knowing how and when has been glaringly obvious. Like knowing that Cait can’t handle watching … Read more

Running for the Train

Cait, knowing we had a long drive ahead, led with her standard question as soon as we pulled out of the driveway, “So, Mom, what should we talk about?”

Feeling more than a little frazzled and grumpy from a ridiculously hectic morning, I said, “Give me a minute.”

I concentrated on unfurrowing my brow, loosening my grip on the steering wheel, and taking a couple of deep breaths.

“Okay,” I said, looking over at Cait. “Now, what was it you … Read more

On the Cusp

I’m beginning to get whiplash as I watch my daughter speed past on her way into teenage-dom. Before too long, she’ll be thirteen. And she can’t get there fast enough.

I am almost daily reminded of this in one way or another now. And I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that this realization often comes with a twinge of sadness for the little girl I’m losing.

As all teenagers are, she’s become quite concerned with looks and what other … Read more

What Plant Are You?

Having just picked a bushel of ripe tomatoes, there was only one thing to do. Get busy making spaghetti sauce.

I put Cait on garlic and herb chopping duty, while I prepared the tomatoes.

I love having Cait help, not just because the work gets done faster, but because Cait likes to talk while she works. That’s what makes the time fly.

In the midst of chattering about this and that, I was having Cait taste all the fresh ingredients … Read more

Devotion

One of the main points Cait listed in her treatise on why she wanted her own dog was that she wanted to get to experience the kind of love and devotion that Kiera and Graidy have for me.

I’d say she’s well on her way.… Read more

Life Not Crazy Enough for Ya? Add a Third Dog.

I think it was John Lennon who said, “Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans.”

Well “life” sure has been happenin’ around here. Not least of which is that I’ve somehow been roped into adding a third dog to our crew.

It all started when Cait began making serious noise again about wanting her own little dog (emphasis on little). Having zero interest in adding a third dog, I told her to take it up … Read more
